We have been back for a little over a week from camp. It has been hard trying to get back into the swing of thing but I had to take the time to blog about the week with the children. We originally had 40 children but after it was all said and done 36 children were on the bus heading for camp. Some were apprehensive, some were scared and some were just very excited. We put on a movie for them to watch but once it was over the question of how much longer began. Once we arrived at the camp they spotted all the counselors in the red shirts yelling and clapping. One of the girls yelled “Look my name is on that sign”. She was so excited. After that they all started looking for their names. We got off the bus and some of the children ran to their counselors but some had to be coaxed. Eventually they all made it to the right person. It was amazing to see these children during the week and see how they had begun to trust their counselors. It was wonderful to see them sitting with their counselors reading their bibles and talking about the stories.

The week passed very quickly and before we knew it the time came to pack up and head for home. On the bus ride home most of the kids were listening to their CD’s and singing the songs learned at camp. It was an amazing experience and I cannot wait until we start preparing for next years camp.

The nurses started an IV since they found that his sodium was low but all his other tests were normal. He did have a case of shingles but other than that he was fine. After the IV infused for a while he started feeling better so we thought he might of been dehydrated. The doctor wanted to admit him just for a night so he could get more than one bag of fluid. They started the process of admitting him and we asked for private room so that my brother could spend the night with him. He is hard of hearing and although he understands and speaks English he prefers his native language of Spanish. Anyway the day went by and no room could be found (now can you really believe this), then they told us that by 10 pm we should have a room. When my brother returned at 9pm I relayed all the information and left the hospital to go home to rest. The next morning I found out that my uncle and brother had spent the night in the emergency room. The reason the staff gave was that they could not find a private room for him (since when has that ever stopped a hospital from admitting someone). Anyway the doctor came in and asked my uncle how he was feeling and if he was ready to go home. Of course he said that he was fine and he wanted to go home. He was discharged from the ER without any instructions which is quite rare. I used to think that the Methodist was the best hospital in town but am now having second thoughts. Well, my uncle is home and still not feeling quite right but he is more comfortable there. His birthday was not quite what we had in mind but we will just have to make it up to him when he starts feeling better.

Needless to say he decided to leave the grass cutting for another day. He went inside and from our deck was able to get a picture of him. The very next day I found him by the door of our screened in porch under a table. He did not even move as our dog TJ passed. TJ did not even notice the fawn as he went about his business. I suppose the fawn plans to make our backyard his home until he grows a little more so when we go out we will have to be very careful.

Royal Family Kids’ Campä. RFKC was founded by Rev. Wayne Tesch in 1985 to create positive memories for abused and neglected children in California. His vision was that there would be a camp in every county. The strategy was to mobilize the local church to meet the needs of abused and neglected children in their own community by establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with County Social Services and providing a one week camping experience. Today there are many camps across the nation providing positive memories for these children.

This is a camp that I am excited to be a part of this year. Pastor Sean Azzaro and his wife Laurie from River City Community Church participated in this camp a few years ago before they came to live in San Antonio and were very moved by the concept of this camp.

Last summer a group of six people from RCCC went to California to observe a week at camp and to come back with ideas of how our church could participate in this wonderful project. They have been working diligently since July of last year fund raising and organizing a camp experience for our abused and neglected children here in SA. All their hard work will come to fruition in July with the help of dozens of volunteers.

I was asked to pray about the role that I would volunteer for and had always assumed that it would be camp nurse since that is my profession. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be asked to be the Child Placement Coordinator. But indeed that is the position that I was asked to fill. After much prayer and procrastination I accepted the position. I was assigned to talk with Social workers and foster parents about the camp, to review all of the applications and to make sure all the needed paperwork was signed and in order. The Directors of the camp and I got together last week to match the children with the counselors they will have for that week. This was a daunting task but with the help of the Lord, we were able to complete this very easily.

I can hardly wait for the first day of camp to arrive. And as a bonus I will be able to go as the camp nurse. There are 42 days until the counselors and others leave to prepare for the arriving campers. Please keep all the volunteers in your prayers that we will be able to fulfill the mission of this camp. Also, pray for the children that will attend that they have a week of positive memories. I will keep you posted as the day draws closer.

I have but I always catch myself before I go out. Well….today that dream became a reality for me. When I went into the closet the light would not go on. It is one of those flouresent lights that sometimes has to warm up before it finally flickers to life. Well, I was in a hurry and I slipped on a pair of shoes that were together on the floor. It was about four in the afternoon as I was talking with a co-worker when I looked down and saw what I had put on in the morning. One black slip on and one brown slip on. I was so embarrassed. I began to think of all the places in the office that I had walked to. Did anybody notice and not tell me? I decided to let my co-workers have a good laugh so I asked them to come to my desk and look at my shoes. They all laughed and said that they had not noticed. A likely story……… That will teach me to put on my shoes without looking carefully!!
